The top table at a wedding reception is usually a long straight table facing the rest of the guests. This makes it easier to hear the speeches and allows everyone to see the newly-married couple and above all, admire the dress! There are many possible layouts for the top table, but the most common 'traditional' layout is shown below:
If required this layout can be extended at each end to include ushers and other bridesmaids. Bear in mind as well, that this is only the most common layout, and as long as the bride sits next to the groom, the other places can be arranged to suit you. If one set of parents are divorced and don't want to sit at the same table, then they should be seated at different tables amongst the guests and their places taken by ushers, bridesmaids or anyone else you like.
Traditionally, the bride's mother is responsible for the seating arrangements for the other guests, but nowadays it is much more likely to be a joint task between both mothers. Always remember though - it's YOUR wedding and they are your guests too!
